Creating infrastructure for captured CO2

Carbon capture is central to decarbonising industrial processes and transitioning to a low-carbon economy.

At Navigator Terminals, we are developing ways to safely store carbon dioxide and transport it to permanent storage or for further use.

How does carbon capture work?

‘Carbon capture’ is a process of obtaining carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air or sites responsible for power generation or industrial activity.

The captured CO2 then moves to permanent storage (sequestration), is reused in industrial processes or converted into biofuel or reusable plastics.

When carbon is repurposed, it’s known as Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU). If sequestered, it’s injected deep underground into rock formations where it’s trapped. This process is known as Carbon Capture Sequestration or Storage (CCS).

Safe short-term storage and transport for captured CO2

At Navigator Terminals, our part in the carbon capture value chain is safely transporting and storing captured CO2 from industrial sites across the UK to permanent storage or utilisation. This could be by sea, road, rail or pipeline.

It’s our responsibility to help make the carbon capture infrastructure as low-carbon as possible. For example, Navigator is designing a multi-model hub that will enable a range of emitters from various industries and locations to achieve their decarbonisation goals through an efficient system.

The UK’s first rail-to-zero carbon capture project

We’re working with Enfinium, one of the UK’s largest waste-to-energy operators.

Together, we’re developing a rail network to transport CO² captured at waste-dispersed industrial sites to our rail terminal in North Tees. From there, a ship or pipeline will safely transfer the carbon dioxide to permanent off-shore sequestration.

This partnership is a testament to our commitment to advancing carbon capture and storage solutions.
