Sustainable Aviation
Fuel (SAF)

The jet fuel of the future

With the power to cut carbon emissions dramatically from flights, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is a significant step forward in decarbonising the aviation industry.

As an established link in the transportation fuel supply chain, Navigator Terminals is well-positioned to support the UK’s SAF infrastructure.

How is SAF made?

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is a biofuel, a low-carbon alternative to fossil fuels.

It is made from renewable biomass, waste biomass and non-recyclable household waste.

Renewable and waste feedstocks

Renewable biomass:

  • Corn, rapeseed and soybean oil
  • Sugarcane and sugar beet
  • Corn grain
  • Algae
  • Used cooking oil
  • Agricultural and forestry waste
  • Wood mill waste
  • Non-recyclable household waste
  • Tallow

Low-carbon SAF production

Feedstocks undergo processes such as hydroprocessing or Fischer-Tropsch synthesis to convert into SAF.

Hydroprocessing uses hydrogen to remove impurities from feedstock. Fischer-Tropsch synthesis is a chemical process which converts carbon monoxide and hydrogen (syngas) into hydrocarbons.

A ‘drop-in’ alternative fuel

Finished SAF is blended with conventional jet fuel, up to a 50% mix.

SAF is known as a ‘drop-in’ alternative fuel due to its chemical makeup, which is similar to that of traditional jet fuel. Because of this, jet engines and the existing infrastructure don’t need to change as much in the transition.

Safe storage for feedstock and finished SAF

Once the feedstock is collected and processed, it’s transported to temporary storage until the SAF-production plants are ready.

At Navigator Terminals, we’re building dedicated storage for biomass and non-recyclable waste feedstock for onward transport to SAF-production plants.

After the SAF is produced, it will return to our terminals, where we can blend it with conventional jet fuel. Finally, we’ll safely store the blended SAF until it is distributed to national airports by road, rail or internationally by sea.

The UK’s first
SAF-handling terminal

Navigator Terminals is working with the UK’s first waste-to-SAF projectLighthouse Green Fuels (LGF), backed by Alfanar

This innovative plant will produce over 165 million litres of advanced SAF and 30 million litres of green naphtha annually.

We are creating a new facility for non-recyclable waste and biomass waste feedstock, as well as the finished SAF product. Our ship, rail and truck terminals will support the export of the blended SAF to airports worldwide.
